SAGE

They were on their way back to the car with a damp, sandy, but sleepy and satisfied Bear when they walked past a vintage clothing boutique at the end of the pier. That sort of thing barely registered in Sage’s mind – she saw girly stuff in the window and just kept right on going. It took her a couple of paces before she realized her fiancée was no longer beside her.

She turned around to find Rosalie staring wistfully at the window display, and Sage gave a chuckle.

“Find something good?”

“It’s beautiful,” Rosalie breathed, drawing one hand down the glass.

Sage and Bear circled back and she slipped her arm around Rosalie’s waist. She had her eyes locked on a knee-length white dress on a dress form in the window. It had delicately embroidered lace and beaded accents, and the skirt was flowing and beachy, perfect for the pier.

“You should try it on,” Sage suggested.

Rosalie’s brow furrowed. “What for?”

Sage shrugged. “Fun?”

“It looks like a wedding dress,” Rosalie pointed out. “I already ordered mine.”

“You looked stunning in that dress, but your eyes didn’t light up in it like they did just now,” Sage pointed out. She pushed Rosalie toward the boutique door. “Seriously – go try it on. For me. Bear and I will wait out here cuz I doubt the owner wants a sandy dog in their store.”

Rosalie went inside and Sage found a bench to sit on not far from the door. She did her best to dry Bear off more with the towel – it was pretty amazing how stubbornly his short fur held on to water any time they went to the beach or took a walk in the rain.

“Babe?”

Sage looked up, and Rosalie was stepping out of the boutique in the dress. It fit her perfectly, elegantly hugging every curve, and she’d never been more beautiful.

“What do you think?” Rosalie asked.

“Hot damn,” Sage said, standing and nearly dropping Bear’s leash.

Rosalie chuckled, and Sage noticed that the shop owner had come outside with her. Probably trying to make sure she didn’t take off down the pier with her merchandise, but she was also grinning from ear to ear.

“I happen to agree,” the woman said, “this dress was made for her. Well, technically it was made in the fifties for another lucky woman, but it’s been beautifully preserved since then, and clearly it was just waiting for you.”

Rosalie did a happy little spin, the skirt fanning out around her. “I really like it.”

“We’ll take it,” Sage said, already reaching for her wallet.

“No,” Rosalie objected, “we won’t.”

“But it’s perfect,” Sage said.

“I already have a wedding dress, and I have nowhere else fancy enough to wear this,” Rosalie said. She turned to the boutique owner. “It’s gorgeous and I appreciate you letting me try it on. I hope some lucky bride finds it and loves it as much as I do.”

Sage wanted to insist, but a nagging voice in the back of her head was a little relieved when Rosalie wouldn’t let her.
